I got good advise on another board which led me to buy a 104cfm panaflo from Directron. You’ll need a DC converter; I scrapped one from my Icecap fan, Radio shack has a converter with multiple settings, that way you can adjust the speed. Its available online. Since I already had a power supply I bought a fan controller along with the fan. Either way it shouldn’t cost more than about thirty$ shipping included and you’ll have a strong silent fan. The best way to cool is to have equal pressure with one fan in and one fan out. I have my fan pulling air out; I like knowing the warm air is leaving my hood, it seems to be a matter of opinion when only using one fan.

i would totally agree with maroonsalty as far as the direction, i have mine running the same way 1 in and 1 out, as far as the fans i have i payed $18.00 for mine from a electronic shop, there 110v so you plug them right into the 110 house current, very quiet, 50/60 hz, i only have to run 1 fan durine the winter months.

www.newegg.com Check out case fans. they give you the decibel ratings as well as the CFM. so you can see how loud the fans will be.

Good thinking! Newegg always has good prices.

But there's a problem. What is considered loud as far as the ratings? Take this fan for example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811999344

I want a fan that is somewhat cheap, moves good amount of air, and is quiet. How quiet it is is the most important, though. :D

Take a look at SilenX fans... they come in all sizes, are very quiet, and can push a decent amount of air. Their largest is 120x120x38mm does 90 CFM at 18dB. I have a few on my tank, and really like them. They also have a 4 fan AC controller (the fans themselves are DC).

Thiago, the one you listed cranks up to 38db. That's F'ing loud for a fan.

Try to stay around 25 db. With the other hums of your tank you won't really notice somehting that low. YOu'd definatley hear that 38

Big second on the suggestion to check out the Silenx fans. I have 3 of the 90 CFM ones on my hood, I can barely hear them, the noise/CFM ratio is amazing.

I got mine here
http://www.acousticpc.com/silenx_store.html

About $22 each. SO worth it IMO. Other fans I've used are like having a 747 flying over the tank, the silenx fans are virtually silent.
