and here is my first attempt. It worked fine:

The power heads suck out the air to start and maintain siphon.

Also important is some method to prime the water trap in outside the tank. Hence the 1/2" tubing going to the "riser". You can adjust the flow initially so the pump pumps and fills the water trap. Then start the water flowing into the tank for normal operation.

That is similar to my 'Mark I' design. My 'Super' version's 20" head provides a factor of 3 improvement in the flow, and the black ABS makes it easier to hide the piping in the rockwork.

I'll post a picture of my Mark I when I get home. It looks like yours, but I use a mouth-driven air line, and a U-bend at the intake end to prevent siphon loss.

Yep the black/grey color will help.

What I do with my 55g (not the "beaslbob" :D overflow) is carm in an egg crate 3" in front of the back glass. Forms an in tank refugium and hides all the plumbing/powerheads and so on.

I also notice you use a skimmer in tank as a skimmer box. So that determines the tank level. Hence the water trap does not have to go up as high. There is a danger that the siphon will "flush" with water trap and empty it.

On my designs above the overflow is external and that runs at that level. I could also run pvc back up to the top in tank to do survace skimming and limit the amount of water drained from the tank during power outage.

Was interesting to me because my idea came from this thread.

http://www.saltcreep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2644

where the guy couldn't understand why his was not draining. He had a design the required to drill a hole in the side of the tank and was just placing the pvc up and over the tank.

So I did this, made some design changes, demoed it at a local club meeting then found out RC had a thread on this years ago.

"Skimmer in tank"?

Uh, no, the picture of the big black thing at the end of the instructions is the ABS Weir. I have no skimmer in my tank, it's in my refugium.

Yep you're correct and the drawing is labeled correctly.

the abs weir kinda looked like an old skimmer.
