As I'm preparing to start up a 34 gal reef tank after an aborted attempt last year (which failed due to me going for a setup way more elaborate than I cared to maintain) I've been looking through my bits boxes and found my SCWD.
First I thought it was dead but a good long soak in warm water with vinegar and it's running again.
I found the SCWD modding threads dealing with how much it restricts the flow and decided that a simpler approach might work, simply enlarging the internal diameter of the in/out nozzles. Fortunately I got a Dremel last christmas
An off the shelf SCWD has an internal nozzle diameter of 12 mm, I've managed to Dremel it to around 15 mm, which is about a 50% increase in area. Going much further would leave the plastic too thin for comfort in my opinion.
Of course doing the original mod is even better, but this is pretty simple and involves no gluing or sawing.
