Hey I'm new here, hopefully doing this right. I'm going to be doing a sump soon (if i can get eerything figured out), just a little ten gallon for my 29 to get some equiptment out of sight. The tank has been going for almost a year and I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to make an overflow without drilling holes in it so I don't have to go thru the effort of emptying it and taking everything out. (I should have done this originally before i set it up, eh...) I have seen one other method but it requires alot of ugly pvc in the tank, which is what I'm trying to avoid by adding the sump, so that would ultimately defeat the purpose. Thanks much!!

There are hang on the back overflow (HOB) that enable you to set up the sump without draining the tank. Check out various style of them by various manufactors, such as CPR, among others.. there are pros and cons, and i suggest you do a research and see if that's what you wannt to do.

BTW, welcome to RDO!!!!!

marking your own isn't that hard. just make sure you have the right tools and the right glues and stuff. GL hope it turns out how you want, if you decide to go the DIY route.

make the overflow from pvc.

here is a simple design I tested.

IMO I would just purchase an overflow. It's an important part that you want to function correctly and not leak!

BTW, I would also suggest getting one that is one size bigger than what you would think you need. Pick the overflow based on the return g/h rate.

For instance if you have a 10gph pump in your sump youre going to be in trouble if your overflow will only handle 8gph (the display will overflow).

IMO CPR overflows are well made. You can also find them on ebay, just make sure they aren't cracked or something.
