Step 1:
Set your room air conditioner to 82 degrees, on the "power save" or "energy saver" mode. (COST $0)
Step 2:
Plug the air conditioner into a timer that turns it on at 11am (COST $10)
Step 3:
Close all doors when you leave in the morning. Make sure all shades are drawn and make the area that your air conditioner must cool as small an area as possible (COST $0)

Wallah! A Chiller on the cheap. A chiller unless vented outside will make the room that it is in hotter! This will make your air conditioner work harder to cool the room. (Begin vicious cycle)

You might be surprised the wattage draw of a chiller plugged into a kill-a-watt. I like room air conditioners as they are made to energy efficiency standards whereas chillers, not so much. Plus chilling a glass box in a 90 degree room is a loosing battle it's cheaper to cool the room than cool a tank in an oven.

well i'm considering the room ac but a 400 bucks or so idk. But when I told the wife she said "why pay for a room ac just for down hear, why not get central air" So I think she might want it after sweating for a the past couple day.

I just thought I could hook some thing up real quick with out spending too much if we were gonna get the central air.

There are multi fan units designed to lower the temp of tanks with heat sinks and such. The water is pumped through the unit and it air cools it. I have no idea on price but coupled with an AC I don't see it being less effective (if not more) than some chillers. Plus the cost of maintenance on the fan unit is probably far less and I would doubt you would have to ever replace it entirely.

Buy a used a AC if it's only temporary. Then you can turn around and sell it when you're done. (cost 0$)

BTW, Home Depot in Monroe quoted my brother in law $8-11k for a Trane Central AC. The price varies depending on which model Trane he gets. Typical bi-level ranch.

Our local Home Depot subs it out to a very reliable HVAC contractor in town. They've been in business for 30+ years, they actually put the CAC in my house about 10 years before I bought it. Still working flawlessly every summer.

I hope you are not talking about one of these http://www.aquariumspecialty.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1049

At $1100 for a unit working on 100 gallon tank is hardly cost effective. It uses 300W of power which is not a much of power saving compared to a 1/4 or 1/5 HP chiller.

Or one of these http://www.deltecusa.us/ecocoolers/ec300_2.php

These will not work well unless you can get the humidity in the room down to about 30%. Your AC will have to be working overtime to get there in our 80-90% days.

the first one is it I think. I didn't know the specifics on it as far as price and power consumption. The idea behind it though as far as chilling, I think could be easily replicated. I have been playing with some ideas involving the same principals of heat sinks and fans.

Fritz had it right. I do the same thing, but I also use a fan that sits low on the floor and points upward toward the tank. This way, the room doesn't have to be all that cool, but the cold air that's low down gets pushed up toward the tank.
