Having trouble with my 250 watt HQI retrofit setup for my 65 gallon display- these are my parts...

Ballast

Reflector
http://www.hellolights.com/index.asp?Pa ... rodID=1663

Bulb
http://www.hellolights.com/index.asp?Pa ... ProdID=540

I've got the sockets in as tight as I feel I can get it without breaking the bulb sliding it in - but the tiny vibrations from the sump pump seem to wiggle the bulb just enough to make it slide out a hair from the socket. At times it feels like the bulb hasn't even moved at all yet the lights have flicked off. The bulb stays on for 5-10 minutes before blinking out. Are there any tricks to make that bulb stay? How hard should I be jamming it in there? Is it possible that it is overheating and shutting off? The ballast doesn't feel warm but the reflector and UV shield are untouchable after that short duration of light.

First of all, unplug everything.

Then take the sockets out and look at them. There may be a couple of screws you can loosen and slide the ends 1/16" or so closer. That should hold your bulb securely.

If you're getting that much vibration from your pump, I'd start by fixing that. What's the vibration from, and how are you noticing it?

Do you have hard piping for your return pump? Slipping in a section of soft pipe can help reduce vibrations. Spa Flex and a high solids glue (Rain n Shine from Home Depot) is what I used to help isolate the vibrations.
