i have never made one but i bought one from here and it works crazy awesome wiht a huge bio load my nitrates are 0. www.aquaripure.com
I also own the Aquaripure system for my 150gal tank. I have a lot of fish and "power feed" them so the system made a HUGE difference in the amount of nitrates in my tank. I don't sell the system but I swear by it and would higlhy recomend it to anyone looking to lower nitrates in there system.

Coil guys, Coil...Let's get back to topic,,lmao.. Oh yeah I run the natureef for it's introduction of beneficial bacteria after the nitrate cycling to 0 and the phosphate option.. I think it's the best I can't wipe out my good bacteria with antibiotics unless I overdose by a lot on the antibiotics.. And it makes mini pods in the reactor also..

The coil version makes sense, why spent $300 when you can make one for much less for same result and don't need to feed?

Different denitrifiers have different benefits.. Mines makes an end product of alkalinity and stronium while cycling the nitrates and phosphates to 0.. Making less water changes more of a reality, and I might add that I have been in this hobby for 11+ years and never had a tank crash...:chefico:

I'm wondering if it pays to make it in a soild color so no light enters it?
I have a few pieces of clear acrylic tube 4" and 6" laying around

from what I was told when I was making mine. You want it to be solid color. You don’t want any light to penetrate and start growth inside it. it also has to be air tight since the nitrobacteria is o2 deprived. So once you build it, that's it, no getting inside again.
When I built mine I I used 2” PVC as the housing. I coiled 85' of 3/8 water tubing from Home depot. Coiled around a 3/8 pvc to train it to say coiled. Turned the two ends upwards one to connect to a bulkhead thru the pvc cap and the bottom pointed back up. The bottom tip allows water to flow back up thru the chamber thru bio balls up to the top to a 90*elbow. The effluent dumps into a strainer of charcoal and crush coral.
It took about 4 month to get the effluent to read zero. You have to start with a pretty much one drip every 1.5 to 2 seconds. Once the internals are cultured and cycled you can turns the drip up a little till you still get a zero reading.
The one thing I don’t like about coil denitrater is if water stops flowing the stagnant water becomes sulfuric and can crash a tank. I have the feeding pump and my vortex wave makers on a battery backup just incase a power outage.
Other then the one ‘con’ the coil denitrater is a great DIY project and works awesome. I can dose my tanks and not worry about nitrates.
Plus it cost me about 50 bucks in parts and tubing. When its all done you can paint it to hide it instead of this white PVC tower sitting next or behind your tank.
