you don twant the skimmer and return pump in the same area, this will allow micro bubbles to be pulled into return and up into tank. if you flip it around and return goes where drain is and so on you will be ok

Ok, so what if I swap the carbon chamber with the skimmer chamber so that return would be the last part after carbon. Would that be better?

Some sumps are designed with the skimmer chamber after the fuge like yours. One of the reasons behind that is so that the fuge gets raw tank water. While the idea sounds good most of the time the fuge also becomes a detritus trap when using that design. If you put the skimmer in the first compartment it wont skim every bit of water anyway and the fuge will still get some unskimmed water. As far as the carbon compartment, you will get more efficient use of the carbon running it in a reactor (like a TLF phosban reactor). Most hobbyist run carbon in a reactor unless they are running zeo or a similar filtration system where they specifically need passive carbon filtration. I would go

Drain and skimmer/ fuge / baffle for a bubble trap/ return. Then just hang a carbon, phosban, calcium, kalk or any other reactor you will be using externally. HTH

Here's a pic of a simple sump design.

you want to skim the water, then have it go to the refugium, and then return . this way any little pods or whatever arent skimmed out of the tank.

Huh! I never even thought of that. So Ill put the skimmer in the first compartment then it'll flow in to the refugium. Then Ill run my reactors last. If Im not gonna run carbon through a reactor, then what should I do with the extra room? Just make the refuge bigger maybe? I mean, what else usually goes in the sump aside from reactors, dosing pumps, & auto top off?
