Help, 90g needs wet/dry

No clue how to go about this, i have a 20g tank sitting around that i can use. are there any specific dimensions i should be concerned with? what the necessary sections and parts i need for this to function properly?

wet/dry? you canmake a sump but id prob go with 30g min.. wet/dry's have a tendancy to cause high nitrates in your system.. what are you looking to do.. if i can help you i will

lol well obviously i have no clue what im doing or even talking about lol. i have the tank set up and cycling with a marineland 400 with bio wheels and 2 koralia 1's, but after going to aqua oceans down in toms river and talking to steve i found out that its hardly enough to support a reef tank. they suggested a sump, which i thought was the same as a wet/dry, with a fuge. i wanna build my own but i dont really know what i need or how to set it up.

i can help you...steve is good he knows his stuff, but sometimes hes a little overkill with the things he wants you to have.. but i agree you got a long way to go..ill pm you my number call me tomorow well talk abt your set up..

hey sorry i didnt call today, i went up too check out aquatic obsessions and OG2 then just chilled up that way for the rest of the day. i think i may have a problem though. im not sure i can get a 30g tank to fit underneath my tank stand, which it has to cause the tank is in the center of the room. would it be possible to use to smaller tanks joined together somehow. i kind of have an idea of how to do it but not sure whether it would work.

Glad to see motortrendz is willing to help you out. I don't see why the 20 gallon wouldn't be enough for your 90. I have 30 gallons on both my 120 & 155. But I guess since you are going for a fuge/sump you need bigger.

thats my only thought on going bigger.. i like to go abt 1/3 of main display for my sump/fuge.. i have my 220 and 40g diaplays and almost 80g of sump/fuge

I was thinking about the size of his stand. Once I take my plumbing into my basement I am thinking of using my 48" X 18" stand for a sump made to those dimension just not as tall as a 75 gallon for my 155. For my 120 I will still be using the 30 gallon cause the stand I have for that sump will be a 36" X 12" stand.
Hubby sort of agreed to putting holes in the walls in order to move the sumps to the basement. He doesn't know yet that we also have to purchase bigger pumps.lol

Ok so I have that 20g tank that I think I will use as my fuge, with a box made out of lexan with holes drill out to place a sheet of polyester on the top with space to add a hang on skimmer on the tank. Then connect with the bulk heads to a long 10g tank with air baffels and the return pump. Does this sound ok?

i would get rid of the acrilic plat with the pad.. get filter socks.. then your skimmer in the same compartment then your baffles put your chaeto in there then let the bulkheads run to the 10g where your return pump is..

ok, i think if i have room underneath the tank i'll add 2 10gal tanks, the second one for over flow. now where should i place the uv filter, on the output of the pump?

huh, u only nee one with the 20g..the uv goes from the first compartment where the water drains into and then dumps back to the same compartment or to the last one where it gets pumped back to the tank..if you put it in the last all your pods that go thru it will not survive

oh ok, sorry the only kind of uv filter ive ever dealt with is an inline filter with a bypass valve for my pond. just looked up a few things though and see what you mean. i think ill hold off on that for a while though, since all i have in my tank so far are 2 small clowns, a damsel (which im trying to give away cause its stressing out my clowns) and 3 peppermint shrimp, and 14 lbs of live rock. i can add the uv later before i start adding coral right?

yea dont worry abt it yet... i never ran one and never had algea problems or parasite issues..if you keep a clean tank and do consistant water changes youll be fine

If your tank is a new system like yours is and especially while cycling I wouldnt run a uv at all- should only be used on matured systems. You want as much stuff to live as you can at this point. Once matured you can use it to kill off the bad stuff because you can afford to lose some of the good stuff to do it, but for now you want all the pods you can possibly get going. I have a uv sterilizer and will only use it if I suspect a disease outbreak such as ich. But it also will only kill what gets put through it and will only kill freefloating ich cycts and other freefloating bacterias-not any that settle on rock or find a fish to host. Thats where garlic extreme comes into play- Ich cycts cant stand garlic so they evacuate from the fish and hopefully get run through ther uv and killed. My system is only a matter of months old- another reason I wil not run a uv sterilizer.

That would be awesome but then I gotta drive all the way up to the bronx lol. If he still has it around thurs I might see about it. That def would be nice though then all I gotta get is the skimmer and a pump

well all other things aside, what size pump should i be looking for? Is 700 enough. I already have 2 koralia 400's, plus the 400 gph marineland h.o.b. filter and will be adding 2 more koralia 750's later on.
