I've been steadily receiving items for my upcoming build (30X30X20) and have now decided it's time to build myself a stand. I found a design that I really like and was wondering if someone could help me out. The top of the stand pictures below has a 3" top trim from the pictures it looks to me that only the corners are mitered. Is it the case that the top trim is all once piece per side or is it two pieces (one on the side and one on top top mitered together)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Correct above the 1.5 inch gap. If it's 4 pieces that means the molding is an L shaped molding.. I didn't even know they made such a piece. I figured it was two pieces per side one piece on the side of the stand and one on the top which he mitered together to make it look like an "L".

He could have bought it that way. A good lumber yard can do that for you out of a chunk of wood as large shaped corner moldings aren't easy to find, but they are easy to cut :)

Oh, I see you live on LI - there is a place in Copaigue on the south side of Sunrise Highway..OMG they have a HUGE (HUGE!!!!!!!!!) selection of moldings in there (the also sell flooring) , will have to find out the name of the place for you. They might even have something like this there (I do not beleiev they cut wood, just sell moldings)

btw - that stand is very nice!

I spoke to the owner of the stand who had it built by a fellow reefer in TX. He said it didn't seem mitered and he thought it was an "L" shaped molding. If you could come up with the name I'd be interested to see if this is something that is sold just not very common.

It IS mitered, any way you cut it (pun intended).
Best I can come up with is:
Long Island Paneling Center
69 E Sunrise Highway
Lindenhurst
631-888-7664

Don't let the name throw you -they are listed in the real yellow pages under both flooring and moldings. Call them first and ask if they have a HUGE (lol) molding selection, if so, that's the place.
I could spend an entire day in there.

As mentioned a good lumber yard can cut wood to size like that. It would be more attractive than 2 different grains from 2 different pieces of wood (per side) :)

btw - that is not the easiest corner to cut from an L, do get enough to allow for mistakes ;)

i'm not a cabinet builder but it looks like they took regular stock and used a daido blade (probably spelt wrong) down the center and then slid over the base ply.

Each side is one piece of wood on that stand. It appears they took a piece of stock SPF 4x4 and ripped it on a table saw to come up with that piece of outside corner trim. Nothing difficult to do.

I'm glad to hear that isn't anyones stand on MR. Because of that I'll add my $.02. The stand is made from very cheap stock. All it is is pine (and SPF). You can tell by the way it took the stain. Pine is a soft wood and requires pre-treatment (Minwax makes a soft wood pre-stain) it's clear. When used, it will help the pine to take the stain evenly. When you look at the pictures of the stain on this stand in question, it's all blotchy. It didn't come out good at all. In addition to the poor stain job, there is no grain on the wood. Another sign of it being SPF.

When you find the shop that will cut you some custom trim, you need to decide what wood you want it cut from. A nice hardwood like oak, maple, cherry, looks a million times better when finished than stained SPF. Most people that want to stain their project will use a wood with grain. The woods like SPF and poplar are much nicer painted as opposed to stained.

I'd also like to follow along. Please post pix when you start the project.

Hope this helps,
Russ

I greatly appreciate the info guys. The owner of that stand does not belong to these forums but by talking to him a little about the stand I can tell you that he did pay a small fortune to have it built. He told me that it was 3/4 birch ply and the stain used was a mixture of walnut and jacobean stain. I guess my question is since im wrapping my stand in birch ply (already ordered the wood) do they make a 4X4 birch ply stock?

It IS mitered, any way you cut it (pun intended).

Looking at the picture, the 2 (left and right of the drink) corners do not appear to have been mitered because it's smooth. The mitered corner is visible where the join is.

If there was more picture of the other corners then we can see it better.

BTW, that's a nice stand.

I think it's just the lighting of the picture. The owner has told me that all corners are mitered but he was unsure if the top trim was one piece or two. It seems that the general consensus here is that it was made from one 4X4

Its a veneered edge, and a not so nice one at that. They built up thickness by gluing the mitered piece you see ontop to the bottom base and then edged it with a edgebanding veneer to match. You can do it the same way by making L shape pieces and laying it around the ply that the tank sits on like you would a molding or frame. Either way its a very simple and quick way of trimming the overhang. To make the L shape its just miter cut length wise on a table saw and folded over not a 4" stock piece. It lets you have continuity in grain patterns along the faces.

I don't know if i have time but i can draw up and design the right way to build that where you have doors on all sides if its needed. Its a very simple and modern design of making an all side viewable tank stand with open access to the sump from all sides.

And Masterswimmer is right, if your going to be building and staining spend the extra few bucks on better wood to make the end product that much nicer. You will be paying 20-30$ more or less a sheet for something better so it pays off in the end. And make sure you talk with someone about doing the finish unless you know what your doing. Not sealing certain woods can blotch up and really darken finishes ruining the end product. And its not an easy thing to fix.

The stand would be real nice in a rift oak or a nice walnut with great graining in it. Gloss finish =0)

Take a look at how the rest of the pictures on the RC thread look for the guts of the stand. He built the stand the right way for whats its supposed to accomplish. And the stain job doesn't look that bad under different lighting for being unsealed maple in a dark stain.
