making my own skimmer

im planing on making my own skimmer...what are the things i should know to make it to my necessary specs?

i have access to all the material and tools i could ever need lol i just need help with actually doing it.

If you've never made one before, you're better off finding a skimmer to replicate, and modifying it only a little. It's a difficult thing to balance contact time, proper microbubbles, etc.

dude, if you want, you can take the dimensions of mine and just copy that. Are you gonna make it a cone or cylinder?

Do you have any experience working with acrylic? If not, for an external skimmer, may I suggest renters / homeowners insurance...

I know a bunch of people who have built skimmers. Almost every one of them has said afterwards that they should have bought one. If you really want to do it, then go for it, but proceed with caution.

lol yea i have experience with acrylic, ive made a tank before.

Make sure you sand your edges well on all joints before you seal them. Keep in mind that it has to withstand the pressure from the pumps, and not just standing water. Also, think about what type of fasteners you want to use. You want it secure, but easy to take apart and clean.

cheaper to buy one then build one, one start with what pump you plan to use, u want a downdraft type skimmer ? a recirc skimmer ? balancing the pump to the body and neck are the biggest part of the skimmer. ive had a few skimmers in my few years check out mojo on reef central he has built a couple of skimmers, if ya have any other questions shoot me a pm

i was thinking of doing a recirculating skimmer, i have access to the material so itll be much cheaper for me to just make on, i would idealy like to use the ocean runner with the needle wheel impeller. thanks for the help!
