If I'm installing a 48" reefbrite fixture to a metal halide unit, how do I offset the additional weight on one side of the fixture so that it hangs even over he tank?

Use stick on tire weights, on the side opposite of the reefbrite.

If you were to just manipulate the hanging kit, then the light will shift forward or back due to the weight.
