wet drys are mainly used for fish only tanks, they have bio balls and pads that are used for the biological filtration. Do a image search on wet dry trickle filters.

sumps are used also for fish only, and fish only with live rock. Sumps have a section for the protein skimmer to go in. Do an image search.

Sump/Refugium. Used maily for a reef tank that will have fish and corals. Has a section for the protein skimmer and will have a section for a sand bed to grow macro algae and the sand bed works as a filtration unit. The refugium can also be used as a place to store an injured or sick fish temporarally.

By definition a sump is a low place in a system where fluid collects. For fish tanks it is a common place to house equipment used to maintain the tank.
What kind of livestock you want to keep depends on what you place in the sump.
A trickle filter, a skimmer, a refugium or just filter socks. These are all items that are incorporated in the sump.
