Hi question I like to ask is two to three tangs pushing it in a150 gallon tank. And does a 150 come shallow so I can reach bottom, also 24 inches wide is good, cause someone told me for tangs 125 gallon shallow 24 inches wide front to back or 180 or bigger is good for tangs. I'm not going all tang type just two or three. Other fish I like is angelfish and butterfly, when I replan stock list I want have a good community peaceful not to aggressive, also a good clean up crew. Please anyone can give suggestion advice on this matter, cause lol I'm bin planning and moving slow on build hope that it's not stupid that my decision is not steady. Thanks in advance

2-3 Tangs in a 150 isn't so bad. I would stay away from angels and butterflies tho. Both fish are hard to care for and both have the potential to nip at corals. I would leave those 2 until you have a couple of years under your belt

I have a 150 deep 48/24/30 deep sucks go with the shallow one, as far as stock 2-3 tangs are fine before hurricanes. Sandy my stock was hippo tang, Cole tang, 2 tomato clowns, flame angel, fox face, and a royal gamma purple and gold it ran. For almost 3 years with no problems

You said you want a peaceful community, so just keep in mind that tangs aren't always peaceful. While I've always found hippo tangs to be OK, yellow tangs are another story. They all have individual personalities. Some can be very peaceful, some aggressive only to other tangs, and others are just P*****. My current yellow is a case in point. I've had it for many years. Up until a few months ago, it coexisted with an equally mean maroon clown. While normal fish would quickly adapt to the maroon, meaning get out of its way, this tang would always stand up to it. What I ended up with was a mis-bar clown (due to scarring from the tang's spine) and an intensely yellow fish with almost no fins. The clown died recently, after maybe 9 years. So now my tang is the boss. Fortunately, my new fish do OK with it. If they are really small, they are ignored. I have 2 angels, a flame and a coral beauty. No problems between them, but the tang hated that coral beauty. Fortunately, it was smart enough to know how to avoid the tang, and after several months, the tang grudgingly accepts it. In the end, though, you can only know what personality your fish has once it adjusts to your conditions. However, your tank should be big enough to minimize aggression.

agression is relative. with hyperdominance, the more you keep, you actually have less injuries. Just think of fish as boxers in a ring.
1 boxer, he is the boss
2, one will win one will lose
3, the weakest will be bullied to the corner and the other 2 will duke it out till there is only one.
Eventually, you get to a point where is are so many boxers in the ring, that no one wins and it's a big rumble.

This applies for the most aggressive Malawi cichlids ( also tropheus from Tanganika) and of course tangs. That being said, in my itty bity 65 gallon, I have four 4-6" tangs and I can really fill it up without any problems if I wasn't worried about pollution.

Another place you can observe this behavior is in the store, where they keep all their yellow tangs in one tang with no problems, but if they only have a a couple, they keep them separate.
The only snag to this idea is you have to add them all at the same time, so no one fish can claim a territory.

Homegrownchiclid thank you for advice. Thats what I was thinking about aggressive behavior, planning on to add tangs that I choose all at once. As long as tank is stable, example of tang is yellow tang, blue tang, purple tang. I'm planning stock slow so I can be shore of fish I want to keep. Cause other type of saltwater fish I want to keep mix stock if capable. Fish like goby and clean up crew, a nice colorful tank fowlr then mixed reef.

another tip make sure you add tangs that are not of the same genus or same color/shape and itll be best off

considering you're adding multiple tangs at once the best way to do it is all at once but once your tank has matured enough to add that large of a load all at once....make sure the 3 tangs are as close in size as possible as well

purple and yellow tangs come from the same family so putting those two together might be an issue

maybe try a hippo, yellow, and some kind of purple bristletooth tang if you like those 3 colors

or hippo, purple, and mimc lemon peel tang for same colors

whatever you choose try and get 3 tangs of 3 different genus's preferably similar in size and preferably different colors for the best success :)

i mean if its in your budget and you have the space go as big as possible....if you plan on keeping adult tangs for their full lifespan i would definitely go with something atleast 6' long

you dont have to choose other fish but its your best bet for no fights however some people have luck otherwise

looking forward to the build thread, im glad to see you doing good research before setting up...i have seen atleast a handful of questions come from you and you seem very open to advice which is a very good thing....keep up the good work and keep up the research

besides yellow(zebrasoma....sailfins etc also in this family) you could go with anything from Paracanthurus (blue hippo, etc), naso (blonde naso, regular naso), Acanthurus(powder blue tang, powder brown, achilles, white cheek, atlantic blue, mimic lemonpeel, etc), or Ctenochaetus(any bristletooth tang, any cole tang, chevron, etc)

zebrasoma and ctenochaetus are a smallish tang you said you liked yellow tangs so theres a small.... acanthurus are like medium in size for the most part, i personally like achilles but they're tough for first time so id say go with either a powder blue or powder brown if choosing this species but look into others.....then naso and paracanthurus are usually fairly large tangs, nasos can be picky and a pain while hippos are much easier if you want to be a little different take a look at yellow belly hippos

my top 3 choices would be your yellow tang, powder blue, and hippo/yellow belly hippo if you want to do different sizes

or if not maybe swap one of the latter ones for a bristletooth or kole tang
