anyone with seahorse tank

thinking of using my 24g ap for a seahorse tank, after going to lfs that carries them my wife said she want's some, which will make setting up a second tank easier for me { she wants } done some reading and i know you cant have corals other than some zoa's. so for anyone that has them your input is appriciated. ty rick

What type of seahorses are they? 24g can and can't hold most normal seahorses. They just grow too big for the 24, the feeding they require to eat well pollutes a smaller tank quick (brine and mysis/cyclo), and they need alot more room than a 24g to be truly happy. Most mustangs and such need a 30-50+ gallon tank. They might look small enough to fit but there are other things that go into a tank for seahorses. Its been done but not recommended.

Talk to Domboski, he has a seahorse tank.

Do a search on MR for seahorses. There are alot of posts on seahorses.

Ill second seahorse.org for info! On that note the minimum tank recomended is a 30. You can keep them in a slightly smaller tank so i think the 24 would be fine. Make sure you buy captive bred horses as they will eat frozen mysis. I used to keep Reidis and tried to breed them. at one point i had many tanks of fry down here but there real tough to raise. The oldest i got one was to 4 months and it killed me when it died. But anyway thats a whole different topic LOL

Definitely do some reading on the seahorse.org chat boards. I was initially going to make my new set-up a seahorse tank, but after doing all that reading changed my mind. I don't have the time that seahorses need - and they really do need constant attention. Even if you get captive-bred (which you should) seahorses, they should ideally be fed with frozen mysis 2-3 times a day. You can get away with feeding just once, but it's not that good for them. They are much more sensitive to diseases, so constant attention should be given to their environment and behavior, to see any changes. But it seems that if one is willing to put in that kind of time and attention - it can be extremely rewarding.

did the sea horse thing for a while but it is alot of work and a real lot of time .I did buy from seahorse.org and was never disapointed once.

i had a trio of reidi in a 40br. great ponies. they would eat frozen foods.

you can put many corals in there with them

zoos
mushrooms(rics,yummas,rhodactis)
gorgonias
xenia
leathers
clove polyps

as long as they don't have stingers or sweepers you should be ok

I was thinking about doing a 29 gallon seahorse tank plumed in with my 120 gallon. I would have done it with some ricordia and maybe some other low flow corals.
