We recently got a 4 inch sailfin tang. We acclimated him and dumped him in the tank. We fed our other fish to distract them when we dumped him in so he could find a place to hide while the others where eating. He went and ate most of the food and ate all of what algea we did have and has been picking all of the copapods off of the rocks and out of the gravel. He eats the majority of the food we throw in, doesn't matter what it is. He is very fat for a tang. Is it possible to have an obese fish? He hasn't stopped eating since we put him in. My camara sucks so sorry, no pics. But he is FAT.

Fish are suppose to be fat and thick, you'll also find that the fish will grow pretty large too. As long as you're feeding it a good diet, things that it normally eats, it will be fine. I would worry if you were feeding it things like Gold Fish or silver sides.

He eats Hikari marine pellets, Formula 1 and Formula 2, mysis shrimp, algae, brine shrimp and Tropic Marin flake food. He eats everything. I have never seen a fish eat so much. I don't feed goldfish or silversides. And if a fat fish is a healthy fish, he is the healthiest I have ever seen.

Sailfin tangs are very hardy fish and I would expect it to eat all the things you listed. If you feel it's eat too much then cut back some, though I wouldn't worry about a fish that is eating too much, unless it's eating the other fish, inverts and corals in your tank.

What kind of algae are you feeding, and how much?

If the most available food is for carnivores, he may be eating more of it because it isn't meeting his nutritional needs.

Does his poop look "normal"?

I'd add these three to his diet if they're not already being offered.

I don't have any of those. He has eaten all of the algae in my tank. I give him Formula 1. I'll go out and buy some Marine Algae tomorrow. The lady at the LFS told me that Formula 1 should be just fine for him.

Formula I & II are fine as is Nori sheets, you don't need to spend your money on those Ocean Nutrition Algae sheets, the Nori sheets you can pick up are use as good and a lot cheaper.

And... it's always good to ignore the front of a package, and read the ingredients list instead.

Formula One and Two are both good foods. I use equivalent products, but feed Formula One more often, as I have more carnivores in my tank.

On days where I think the pickings are slim for my herbivores (maybe I'm feeding Formula One that day), I add some seaweed sheets.
