I have been thinking of starting some sort of Ter/Vivarium for a few years now. Of course, with any other live animal hobby this would need substantial research. I am thinking of starting up something w/ exotic frogs, but am also open to any other ideas. It would be great if any of you out there could reccomend some good sites for beginners in this area. Also any expertise would be greatly appreciated! Anything anybody has would be invaluable. Thanks for your time. :D

First ask yourself: crickets or no?
You cut out the vast majority of small herps if you don't want to deal with the hassle of getting live bugs all the time, but it makes life simpler. If you just want something low maintenance, newts or aquatic frogs would work out fairly well. If crickets, get thyself clicking on those links! :P

I enjoy making fruit fly cultures, but I think crickets are disgusting. I phased out my larger frogs etc, and just raise flies now for the darts. Its totally easy once you get in the routine of it.

Hi Dan,

From this site (about halfway down the page), I came across this other site:
http://www2a.biglobe.ne.jp/~wild-sky/vi ... an0312.htm

Just a general question for you (or anyone who might know) ... I noticed that in this vivarium, there's at least one, or possibly two ultrasonic humidifier/foggers going on in there. Is it OK to keep livestock close to these things? I guess frogs don't care if they're out of the water, but don't they swim in the water sometimes? Where do they lay eggs (if they happen to breed on you)?

I assume fish in a vivarium with an ultrasonic humidifier is an absolute no-no.

The foggers are really cool. I just don't know if you can use them in vivariums that have animals?

(Sorry -- I'm a complete noob but this stuff is fascinating. Want to try this if I can learn some more first ... 8) )

I've never used a fogger, but I have seen them in set-ups with frogs. I think the frogs can be injured by the fogger, but darts don't go in the water too much. I think you could rig up some kind of cage or something to protect them.

Different dart species have different life cycles, but generally most don't lay eggs directly in a large body of water. Mine lay the eggs on land, and when they hatch carry the tads on their back to the water!
