If i put my 72" x 18" tank stand on a piece of plywood that is 72" x 24" would that distribute the tank weight over a bigger surface area?

Say that my tank weights 2000 lbs, that would be 2000 lbs over 9 square feet on the original stand, however,
if i put down a piece of wood thats 72" x 24" under the stand would that distribute the 2000 lbs equally (if level) over 12 square feet?

yes but if you put the stand on a piece of 2" x 4" then the plywood you increase the area of weight distribution. the 2" x 4" will spread the weight out evenly instead each leg of the stand focusing down it's weight on only 4 parts of the board.

i really don't think its needed. most floors have a sub floor of 3/4, then a finish floor over that. check out how your floor is constructed. if you don't have the proper beams to support it, distributing the weight won't help.
