Hi all
So I went to the LFS this past weekend I was looking for a starfish and since am fairly new to the hobby I didn't know what to get , long story short the guy assured me that the red thorny star is reef safe so I got it after some research it looks like it is not so now it is about 3 inches in diameter they say online that they will eat corals as they get bigger so my question is do you guys think I can keep it for a bit of should I just take it back the problem is that the store is an hour away

Ya I agree but am sure it is not worth an hour drive to go back to that store I think just take it to the LFS near me , they won't pay anything for it , I got it for 18$ so it is not a huge loss , I hate those impulse buys like a sob who sold me a sponge when I just set up my tank and told me that it is very easy to care for its perfect for a begginer of course 3 month later it was dead but I guess you don't learn for free

It sucks someone was passing along bad information, but never be afraid to whip out your phone and quickly google something if you're thinking of buying it. This is a collaborative hobby, with many differing opinions on animal husbandry - the employees at your LFS won't always concur with the majority opinion on individual critters' relative reefsafeness!

Best advice I can give you is, Never impulse buy anything! Whatever it is, you'll always have a chance to buy it later, no matter what anyone says! Before you buying anything, make sure you do research (know what the animal is, what it eats, what type of setup/tank it needs to thrive & size requirements.

Also, dont be afraid to test employees by asking questions you know the answer to already.... This will test their knowledge and honesty.

General rule of thumb any starfish with that body shape, classic stocky shape are non reef safe, chocolate chips, crimson, knobby, better safe then sorry and never add to your reef. Fish only though they are great and much hardier then the linkias and fromias and other reef safe stars.
