Refugiums maintenance?

I read alot about Refugiums. I was thinking of placing one when I get my 120Gal up. I was thinking of having it under my tank in the sump. I read alot about Miracle Mud no good and also if I put sand we need to replace it in 6 months. Is there nay other ways to install a refugium with no maintenance. and have it maintain itself naturally.

sand doesnt have to be replaced, only miracle mud. All you need to do is put a Deep Sand Bed in, throw a good light over it and put some LR rubble and cheato and it will run itself. It may reqire you to still clean up detrious that settles in sump and cut chaeto as it overgrows.
