After messing around a bit, I came-up with a simple solution to surface skim in my non-drilled 72 gallon reef.
If you have a Rio pump on your skimmer, use the "basket" cover on the intake area. Mount the Rio "upside-down" so that the basket is at the top. Then, when surface films appear, simply slide the pump up till it is sucking the surface. Actually brings in a lot of air and makes for a nice O2/water mixture; also a bit noisy as it slurps in the surface layer. Within minutes, the surface is skimmed. Simply slide the pump back down so that it is not slurping the rest of day and repeat as needed.
I tried putting the Remora skimmer-box on a non-Remora skimmer and was not satisfied. No I am and I thought I would share.
