Hello, enough lurking, now time for a question.

I was wondering what the effects of dissolving kalk directly (to saturation) into a bucket of sea water would be. would this deplete the alkalinity? magnesium etc.

My point is, I do not get much evap on my tank (100G), approc 0.5 G/day and so am having trouble getting enough kalk in. I was thinking that what I could do is siphon 5 gals of aquarium water into a bucket, saturate with kalk and add back to the tank dropwise.

By repeating this process every day or so I could add a lot of high calcium water to the tank without increasing its volume.

What do you guys think?

cheers

Saltwater is already supersaturated. Adding kalk directly to saltwater will cause most of the good stuff to precipitate out, leaving it far less concentrated that properly prepared kalkwasser.

thanks for the quick replies.

esmithiii-I have an acrylic tank which is mostly sealed at the top, and no sump-hence low evap. the tank is in my living room and I really dont want the noise of fans.

With regards to the vinegar, I've contemplated it but am not sure about it. I mean in terms of the effect of adding all that acetate to the tank. We are constantly trying to reduce organics in our tanks and so adding acetate sounds like it could provide food for nuisance (sp?) algae.

tyoberg- I agree with what you say, but what if the water isnt saturated ie its water from my tank which has levels of Ca below what I would like. would it still precipitae out the Ca?

Also what about the effects of adding calcium acetate to the tank water instead of Ca(OH)2?

thanks

Why not use vinager to up the amount of kalk you ca dissolve in the water? Why not add a fan to increase evaporation?
