Well, well, well...guess what...
It appears as though my skimmer DID in fact have a break-in period. Got back from a party just now, I walked straight over to the aquarium, opened the cabinet and...FOAM CITY! The foam had risen up the foam tower, up the collection cup, and draining out as water at an unbelievable rate. You better believe it when the manual says to run the drain line to the sump for the first few days. I had set the skimmer with the gate valve all the way open, and the mag 9.5 throttled back a little less than a third. Obviously, the foam is way too wet, so I have just now throttled back the pump. But I am happy, because I know this skimmer is capable of producing a solid tower of foam. Hopefully I will get a good, dry foam by tomorrow morning. I'll try to post a pic if it performs to spec
Rhodes..hmm..I think the SEN 900 will help a lot..though I hope you boought a gate valve to throttle it back! When you get the SEN, try doing what I did..open the gate valve all the way, and give the skimmer the most pump flow it can handle.
If the skimmer overflows madly with foam, then it is working. But give it time of course. I think you will like the SEN 900. My initial belief was that too strong a pump would cause too much turbulence to cause a good foam, but I was wrong, as I saw today. The EV-150 can handle much more than a rio 2500 or mag 7! The problem though, is that the foam tower is not tall enough to allow the foam to dry.
Rhodes, if your skimmer is still not working, i would test it on different water. Maybe fill up a rubbermaid tub with fresh saltwater, and see what happens. With all due respect to your reefkeeping abilities, it could be that your water quality is funny..wrong pH, water conditioners, additives..etc. Also, contact Jason, if you have not already done so. I believe he is on vacation right now, but he will reply promptly, and i don't think he is one to give up on others' problems. Oh, another thing: if you can, raise the skimmer so that the gate valve is above the water. This will allow to handle more of the SEN 900's flow. Good luck!
