I just experienced a TOTAL fish wipe out. Every fish in my tank is dead. 13 in the main tank, 27 baggai babbies in my inline breeder tanks.

Some of the snails seem to be droping.. What can be done to help has ben done.
The corals look like ****, but some seem to be coming back
What i think happened is my pink belly cuc got sucked through a power head. I found bits of him through out the tank. This power head had a gaurd on it.. not much of one, but still had one.
I have one cuc left in the tank at the moment, but i am pretty sure he is about to be traded back to the store.
Please everyone make sure your pumps are gaurded better than they way they come from the box, or get rid of your cucs... they are great sand siffters, but IMO not good enough to outweigh a total tank crash

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Sorry to hear about your loss,

I had a brown cuke get sucked into a PH once but it had no ill effects on the tank at all. The cuke was pretty mangled but to top it off he survived. Don't know if some cucs are more toxic than others. More colorful might be more so, as bright colors in many animals usually indicates poisons to deter predation.

That sucks! I had the same thing happen to me several months ago...I had 2 pink cukes and one apparently got sucked into a powerhead. It killed all of my fish, but my inverts and corals were not affected at all. Lost a puple tang that I had for quite some time. Got rid of the other cuke and will never risk getting another. Tough lesson to learn...Sorry about your loss, I know how it feels...

After this happened to me, I did about four 50% water changes over a 2 week period. I slowly added fish...haven't had any problems since. Good luck!

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a small water change, and started running charcoal as soon as i noticed it. I am going to probably do a few more water changes, but as long as the corals come back by sometime tommorow i will probably not do much more aside from probably getting rid of my other cuc.
Its to bad, i kinda like them, but i don't want to risk the loss.

If i had known that the pink bellys could cause this i never would have had one. I lost a breeding pair of clowns, banggais, a pair of coral beuaties, and many other fish. Aside from the feeling of loss as they were like pets, I figure i lost 5-600 dollars worth of live stock, and thats assuming my corals make it.

OMG! I feel so bad for you. What a shame!! I've read about the cuc family and the chance of this happening and thought that if I ever got a big tank that I'll make sure I don't get one. This just sealed it for me. Really feel bad for you. Hope your corals make it and Happy New Year.

I Feel for you. I had one in my first tank, I moved it from that tank to a nano because I read about them. One day it got sucked up in the PH and well... you know what happened. I saw a damsel that was in the tank kill over really quick. That did it for me, I will never get one. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Thank you all for your condolences. I never would have believed it if i hadn't seen it with my own eyes. When i first got to the tank there were still some fish that weren't too bad. By the time i got i motion and figured out what happened 2-3 minutes, they were dead. It happens fast by the looks of things.
All of my soft corals look like they will be OK, but my two LPS don't look so hot.. will have to wait till morning. Here's hoping :-

sold to me as a pink belly cuc.. for the most part it spent its time in the sand, but opccasionally would climb the glass to the top.. i guess last night was the climbing night.
Maybe it is just a more toxic cuc than normal ones.. Its the only thing that has really changed in my tank.. aside from all the fish being dead :-(

Still waiting to see if my corals make it, Xenia looks great, the rest look terible.. I am just waiting now.

That really sucks! Wasn't it a full moon? My cucs tend to go climbing during fullmoons.

For what it is worth, I hate cucs. I have two tiger tails. They keep their back end under my rock and eat outside of the rock in the open. The problem is they crap back out under the rock. My nice open rock work is now blocked with little mountains of sand that I cannot get to in order to spread it out.

You may want to post this in Dr Shimeks forum at ReefCentral for additional insight on the toxicity of various cucs.

Just a bit of an update.
The corals seem to be on the road to recovery. The LPS seem to have receded a bit on their skeletons, but they are extended. The rest of the corals are open or partially open. The snails seem to be doing ok as do the worms and stars (with the exception of one smaller birllte that died).

I did post to DR ron and he said that it was his understanding that the pink bellies were not toxic. I have since posted my setup details and the story time line and am waitng to hear back on what he thinks may be the culprit.
