How Old? A ballast will typically last about 10-12 years. A 150 watt replacement ballast won't be expensive.

Your problem sounds more like a bad socket than a ballast problem.

I have an old PFO coil/cap ballast for a 150 watt bulb thats giving me fits. Sometimes it lights up with no problems, other times I have to fiddle with the bulb to get it to fire. Screwing the bulb in and out a few times with power on to get it to fire up. A new bulb makes no change.

Does this sound like a problem with the starter cap going bad?
