I am thinking of having 1 purple and 2-3 hippo's. They would all be bought as very small and I'd introduce all hippo's at the same time. The tank has a lot of swimming space. Is it okay or do you think the hippo's will fight?

They should be fine. I have seen 4 hippos together in a 250 gallon tank with no problems. If I am not mistaken, Hippo tangs are among the most docile tangs.

I agree with Tremelle. Be very careful to choose 4 very healthy ones which will be difficult to find all at once. Because this tang is an ich magnet use the garlic treatment and choose only fat, vigourously eating, spot and tear free fish. Anything less than that pass on the fish.
With a tank your size have you considered adding other tangs as well?

I need to get more info on the Garlic treatment (any pointers) and yes I'll add 1 purple tang (first). I have a 75G reef that has a sailfin (larger) that I may move down and turn the other tank into a FOWLR (scorpion lion fish has been bantered about).

Yes please put the sailfin in the large tank. 75 is small for any tang.
After choosing only very healthy tangs do the following. Soak unflavoured garlic extract in nori and small pieces of dried shrimp or krill for 30 minutes. Feed only the garlic soaked food for 10 days. This is a preventative measure but will work if the tang has a light infestation. You can find the garlic extract at a health food store but in a pinch can use the juice and tiny pieces of garlic.
Put the sailfin in first along with any other tangs before the purple or the purple will chase the hell out of the others and cause them stress=ich.
Tangs are five star fish but only for tanks 100 plus.

I'm not a big garlic treatment fan, but I may be the exception. You can probably put a lot more than 3 hippos in your tank, especially if you add them small. However, keep this in mind. Mortality among small tangs can be high because of a myriad of factors, including the fact that tiny ones often get sucked into overflows or powerheads, and they are susceptible to ich. I think they pretty much will get it when you put them in, so if you're starting out right, there are posts about the lifecycle of ich being around 30 days or so, so I would quarantine the baby tangs first and treat them with something that will kill ich, instead of garlic, which will merely help them shed it through the slime coat being stimulated. When they've been treated, toss them in the big tank. Or, you could just let nature run its course and see if your tangs get ich. If they do, and your tank is healthy, they'll kick it without any help from you and be fine.
