VHO or PC for 55 Tank

I just bought an acrylic 55 and want opinions on VHO or PC lighting. I would like some SPS or clams, if possible. The tank is only 20" high, so I was hoping that if I put them high in the water column that I could house some SPS. However, with these limtations in mind, should I go with PC or VHO to accomplish this? MH are not an option at this point. Please advise.

I'd go with VHO. Cheaper initially and cheaper to replace the bulbs. WHat are the dimensions of your tank?

I got a good deal on PC through AH Supply, fit 6 55W over my 55 (need to DIY and squeeze one of them...). However, a lot of people agree with scooterr, and I've the consensus seems to be that VHO gives better color.

I began with 2x96watt PCs and switched to 4 95watt VHO(Icecaps).I definately think that the VHOs bring out the natural colors better.The bulbs are cheaper too.The neon colors are great.The best are the green metallic shrooms.

I've used both starting with VHO, switching to PC, and then converting back to VHO. Watt per watt PC's tend to make your tank look brigher but after maintaining the same corals under both types and even a combination of both (PC daylight - VHO actinic)I would have to recommend a straight VHO setup to you. Four 110w VHO's powsred by an Icecap 660 would be my pick for florescent lighting over your 55g.

4 110W, so 3 daylight and one actinic? Or should I go 2 and 2?

Personally, I would go with:
1 - URI Super Actinic R™ (Blue 03)
2 - URI Actinic White™ (Daylight 50/50)
1 - URI Aquasun™ (10,000k)

I have a friend that has wonderful luck with
SPS coral and clams with the above combination using 4 foot URI VHO bulbs and a Ice Cap 660. He used to run three 50/50's and one Actinic 03. He never really said why he switched one to Aquasun.

Watt for watt, PCs have greater intensity, and their shape put more light in the tank. They are more expensive, though.

I'd go with VHO, especially Icecap, then when you do eventually upgrade to a larger tank and/or desire MH lights (which you will) the VHO actinic are great for supplementation.

I'm using a MH/PC combination over my tank. If I had to do it over again, I would go with VHO. If you have the space VHO is the better choice.
