my lionfish developed cloudy eyes earlier in the week. i had a huge (.5) ammonia spike, and i think that had something to do with it. i think he is having a hard time seeing when i offer him food. any solutions??

Hi:
cloudy eyes are usually caused by stress related issues (poor water quality, new tank, etc) which result in bacterial infections or physcial trauma.
It appears you might have indentified your stressor. The problem maybe if the ammonia spike was severe enuf it might have burned the eye tissue.
Is the fish still eating? if so continue feeding him, and ensure your enriching his food(he eats frozen prepared marine flesh???) Are you stick feeding this fish, or at least ensuring that the food gets close enuf for him to smell/see it?)
If hes not eating, you might want to attempt to treat him, but since this might be a burn and not bacteria it may have little effect.
keep a watchful eye on this lion, and if he stops eating i would attempt to treat him, if after afew days its getting better then the burn is resolving.
what type of lion??? what are his tankmates?? tank info will help alot.

Water change, water change, water change!

Have you identified why there is a ammonia spike? How old is the tank? Are you using bioballs? For how long are the bioballs in service?

first off, thanks for the responses

ok, 75gal FOWLR, tankmates are 2 domino damsels, 1 sailfin tang, and 1 foxface rabbit. no one bothers him, except one of the damsels, and i am sure he will take care of that problem if necessary. this is a fairly new step-up (2 months), and he has been in tank 3 weeks. ammonia spike (i believe) was caused by lion beginning to eat (did not eat first 10 days). he has been eating well, and still does. lfs suggested penicilan. i tried crushing up half of a pill in some water and soaking it up with krill, but he didn't like the taste. can i treat directly in display tank? (i have no quarantine tank available) i worry about crabs, starfish, etc. any more advise??
