I've now got a ton of red cyano bubble algae in my 10 gal nano which hasn't been maintained for a month and a half due to limited access after a fire in the building in which I work. What is the best way to get rid of this stuff? Will erythromycin work on bubble cyano?

It is very hard to impossible to get rid of once you have it because it is half bacteria.

I believe it is contagious and that I got mine from a LFS that had it in its tanks. I never had the problem until I bought fish from there.

You can beat your head off the wall trying to get rid of it manually or you can buy something to kill it. I got rid of mine with No-Cya-No. It took the whole 1-liter bottle to treat it. I have a 38 gallon tank with a 15 gallon sump
Once you get rid of it, you can then maintain good water parameters so that you don't get it back.

Better living through chemistry is a nice concept, but if the tank were larger I would suggest a conch. They eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I have used fresh water mayracin which is the same thing and easy to get at local LFS. it worked great for me mine was to the point of choking out my tank had to dose twice in 48 hours and it was gone. However do not run a skimmer or charcoal while you are doing this and after the cyno is gone do a couple of water changes before using the skimmer agian other wise your skimmer will go nuts. Also I used my magnum 350 canister as the distrabution point I put it in the empty carbon canister and let it curculate... I hope this helps good luck

I am going to respectfully disagree w/ jethro. I have never had a nano tank, but in both my 55 and my 180 I have had bouts with it. Patience and good nutrient export worked in both cases. I once used erythromycin and it is a 6 to 8 month fix.

Just my $0.02

I just finished fighting a 6 month battle with Cyano...

Did 25% water changes weekly for 6 months with marginal results...

One 250mg capsule of erythromycin totally wiped out the cyano in 3 days, with no apparent adverse effects to other creatures...

I thought I might get an ammonia spike, because the erythromycin would (could) effect the Nitro processing bacteria.
The good news is I did not detect any ammonia...

I agree cyano is an easy fix. i belive problem hair alga is harder. if you maintain good water quality and aeriation it's easy to rid cyano. But I had a bad outbreak ....this was before I knew its wasn't liked or good. I let it grow cuz I thought it looked cool untill it started choking everything. But I used chemi clean ..w/c and increase circulation. it was gone never to be seen
