Yes, the 5500 k bulb is to yellow when compared to a 10000k bulb, but you can suplement them with some vho actinic. These bulbs are very used here in Europe with good results. They are not so white as 10000k, but they work as well. If you can, go for a bulb whit higher Kelvin rates.

If the bulb is a Venture, than it is fairly white. Whiter than Iwasaki's. (I've personally done a side by side qualification). A lot of people do like supplementation though, for Iwasakis, and its likely many would supplement this bulb as well.

Hey,

I was looking into buying a metal halide retrofit kit, and saw that it comes with a 5500k bulb, i am not going to put any corals that are TOO photosynthetic so i am not really worried about that. My question was does it cast a "yellowish" light on the tank, or is it still pretty white? thanks

What watt bulbs are you talking about.I feel the 10,000k bulbs with atinics have a nice crisp white looking appearence.I have a 75g tank with 2-175w 10000k german bulbs and 2-110w VHO actinics.

Well, I can compare soon. My 400watt Venture 55K, is on the way. I have a 400 Iwasaki, a 400 12K Sunburst and a pair of 175 watt 10K Ushio/electronic ballast.

Should be easy to compare the colour of the tank, esp. between the 65 & 55

All of the 5500K MH's 175, 250 and 400 are IMO the most underated bulbs on the market. Hell if Venture just called them 10K's I'd bet the majority of people out there would be raving over them.
