when to change?

are there any visible signs when to change the media in a ca reactor? such as does it change color or texture?

It's my understanding that the media in the reactor will simply dissolve, and just has to be topped up or replaced entirely. I've lost about 25% in the last year or so that I've had my reactor going.I figure another year or two and I'll replace all of it. I'll just throw out what is left.
