Hi everyone. This morning I took a trip to one of the local saltwater specialty stores around rochester(lucky me there is like three of them and they are good)and I came home with what the guy called "black snails". He said they were batter then turbos, and they were cheaper. I have been having green hair algae probs lately so I decided to try a couple and man, do they kick ass! They eat hair algea like champs and every other type on the way. I don't know much about snails because I just bought a bunch of astreas when I first got my tank and they sucked. These are great. [Grin].

Well this is just my luck. I was just reading a thread on reefcentral or the reef tank(slipped my mind that fast) and suposedly these won't last long in my tank(or any other for that matter). I guess they are collecter from very cold waters and slowly die in the temps we reefers run. Common name is black top shell. Black shell with silver at the very top. Crap

Now the question is? How good is the LFS that sold you the snail if they did not mention the h2o temp problem that you may run into? good luck.

If they live long enough to eradicate green hair algea it will be money well spent. I know I would sacrifice a few. Keep us posted!

The snails will not erradicate hair algae - they may keep it under control - but you have to get to the real problem - your water quality - you have a problem with nutrient in your water! Can't tell what is causing problem - you didn't mention the criticals on your tank.
