Is it true that any brand of RO can be replaced with other brand of RO membranes? I forget where I heard this from but I was told that an RO membrane, doesn't matter what brand it is, can be fitted into different brands. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Do you own a RO unit now? Are you trying to replace a membrane? If you want complete answers, you have to provide more information. I can say most units are interchangeable but I cannot say for sure all are. The common ones for the aquarium trade include Spectrapure, Kent, Captive Purity, Aquafx, Reefpure, ARS, etc. These should be all compatible in membrane housing, membranes, pre filters, and DI cartridges. There are others either for commercial industries and/or home use but I cannot say they use the same size membranes.

botp2k1,
No I don't own one now, but I thinking of buying one from Aquafx. The units they sell look pretty good. I live in Canada, and the shipping for future part replacement is going to be very expensive. So, I was thinking of buying the unit from them and buy the parts locally in the future. It helps if I can buy any brand, instead of looking for that particular one. I know for sure I can get Kent and Spectrapure here.

Kitta, you should be fine with the Aquafx if you choose to go with them. Kent and Spectrapure are more expensive but they are also more established. Spectrapure has an incredible website that has almost any add on you would ever need. I suggest you also look Reef Pure Systems. I have a unit that is arriving tomorrow from him. There is also a coupon for 15% off I found for his systems. He may also have some other deals for you.

I have looked all around for a system and weighed all the options I can think of. Here is what I ended up with; 100gpd, 1 micron prefilter and carbon block, DI, pressure gauge, flush kit, and John Guest quick disconnects. I also got a TDS tester, this helps determine when the membrane and the DI cartridge needs changing. Just so happens the system comes with the JG connects, flush kit, and 1 micron cartridges. I would have settled for 5 microns, no flush kit, and regular connects. Some say a flush kit is a must but I think it depends on ones water quality, the JG connects are a plus, but the pressure gauge is a must IMO. Here are the main "brands".

ReefPure - www.aquariumwaterfilter.com
ARS - www.aquaticreefsystems.com
Aquafx - www.aquariumwaterfilters.com
Spectrapure - www.spectrapure.com
Kent Marine - www.kentmarine.com
Captive Purity - I do not know if they have a site.

Is it more the distance or the fact that you are in Canada that makes the shipping expensive? Would it help if you ordered through a place closer? Jason at www.premiumaquatics.com carries a few systems and he is in Indiana, USA. If you were not confused before, you sure will be now.

I bought a unit from Reef Pure. This guy used to be the CEO of Aqua-Fx and this is his new company. I got an awesome deal and a great unit. 200 GPD. He through in a free TDS meter and sink adapter as well. Im happy with the unit so far. It beats having to run up the street for RO water. Feel free to mail me with any questions.
