I purchased a colony of Starburst Polyps yesturday that are not showing at all. I know its only been a day, but I'm wondering if I need to worry. I researched the archieves, and read several posts on the matter, but could not find any outcomes or solutions. My xenia's are still pulsing away, and everything elese looks fine. :? I've read that these corals are suppposed to be pretty hardy...any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

SPECS: 125 gallon, (2) 96 watt 50/50 PC's (all corals in first 5 inches or so of water), 70 lbs live rock, 70 lbs lava, 100 lbs coral sand, 300 Gallon Fluidized bed, 30 gallon sump (newly set up), 77 degrees C, salinity 1.025, nitrate 10 ppm (refugium not fully etablished), alkalinity 3.3 meq, pH 8.3, Ca 400 ppm.....

I purchased star polyps about three weeks ago,,, The first night they really didnt show at all... The second day when i got home from work they were out just alittle bit. I think that they are very timid at first, and shy to other tank inhabitants...

Now my polyps have about doubled in number and in size... in just two weeks.

I only have a 30 gal tank, with 20W 50/50 6000k/actinic, and i dose iodine and Kent 2 part every other day...

Id say give it some time, and it will take off in no time!!! especially if you have no problem with Xenia...

Is that sereously all the light you have or do you have four of these bulbs running. It's just that on my 25 G tank i have 110W of light coming from four bulbs, two actinic, two full spectrum. If thats all you have i would say that your heading for trouble soon.

Same for you trigger, your lacking illuminatum big style. Ive got more light than you and my tanks 1/9th of the size of yours.

And is your fluidised sand filter really 300 gallons :?

There it is, just incase you wanted a look. :D

Well it really doesnt matter how many watts per gallon you have...

Its how far you have your pieces of coral set from your bulbs...If you have stronger bulbs, you can place them deeper... Trigger says he keeps his 5" down, and I am about the same...

Although I do intend on getting stronger bulbs...My polyps are exploding, and are doing just fine. Star Polyps are not as demanding as other LPS... they tolerate just about anything...

True, you are talking about some very low light demanding corals, and your statement refering to placement rather than WPG is also true. Seen as you know, youll have no problems. Providing that you are aware of the limitations such a configuration offers.

Do you plan on moving these to a lower level, therefore freeing the space for moon's, Brain's, Plate's, Torch's, Galaxia's and such once sufficient lighting will support them?

Its just your giving pride of place to what i would call gap fillers at the moment. Id be carefull with the Polyops, as you say they grow like wild fire. Check out the massive portion of Green Star Polyops i have (its the large green mass to the left). If i had my way now that space would be occupied by something that would utilise the space/resources more fully. Those green star polyops would grow anywhere, and usualy do.

Just wondering, seen as you have 50/50 bulbs and therefore no dawn/dusk what photopereod are you using. You may find increasing it slightly will aid colonisation, if thats what you want.

As far as the fluidized bed is concerned, it is smallest that Lifegaurd makes, FB 300, about 17" long, RATED for up to 300 gallons. I use a Hagen 201, the smallest powerhead Hagen makes to run it....I might be too much biological filtration, but it is heads and tails better that the 600 gallon/hour wet/dry I was running. I am am now running a 30 gallon sump.

...Ya gotta start somewhere....I've kept aquariums my entire life and am new to reef concept. These seemed like good beginner corals. I do have all the ballasts and hardware to run 2 250 watt metal halides...I just haven't forked out the 200 bucks or so for the lamps.

Well, this is my first shot at any coral (cept for a shroom, not coral).

I wanted to see if the daily upkeep would prove to be too much of a hassle for me, but its really not that bad. So now that i had my experiment, I'll move on to bigger and better things, for sure. Just waitin on the $$$. But i really enjoy keeping the reef (kinda a reef) tank.

I had an older post this week, looking for advice on the next hardiest polyp or LPS. I think I just need to buy my 2x96 W PC and ill be all set up.

Starburst polyps = Green Star Polyps?

It is common for the newly acquired GSP not to extend their polyps for a few days. As long as you believe the water parameter is fine, leave it be. The more it is moved, the slower they will adjust themselves to the new environment.

ooops, I had to move it a couple of times, since it kept falling from where I had put it....thanks for the heads up.

As far as I can tell Starburst polyps are equivalnet to Green Star Polyps

The starpolyps finally made their way out!!! Here's to patience. I had to move them to my refugium, since the trigger was munching on the purple base. I had pretty much forgtten about them when I notice that the $40 rock was fuzzy. Sure enough there they where in massive numbers. I have built a small rack to hold them up above the calupra until my reef only tank is up and running.

It's a proud fish geek day for this kid.
