I have a 15g reef, and dont have the money to buy a skimmer yet (college student) but I just bought a power filter thats cycles 330gph. should I use this or just go with power heads and live rock, for filtration?

are ther any disadvantages to using a power filter for a reef???
or advantages???

thanks,
JEFF

I would use the on filter. Never heard of that before.

i would use it as a carbon filter or for circulation. i am opposed to any type of mechanical filtration. if you do use the floss, clean it extremly often.

a skimmer can be very cheap. i suggest even a cheap one.

i have made my own. it's very easy if you know the principles. maybe do a search in DIY?

Lee's is as cheap as you get. i bought one for three dollars. that's not retail though, retail is probably fifteen or so. it's likely cheaper than your power filter.

or you could do major water changes every month. that would be easy with a 15g tank.

Use the filter for circulation and for carbon or other resins. Just do not use filter pads.
