I am new to the whole reef idea. I will be starting a 29 in the near future. I am looking for anyone near me that I could possibly pick their brain in person for a while. I live in West Chester PA (not too far from philly)

I'm not from Philly but travel there often for work. I highly recommend The Hidden Reef as a LFS. I like it so much, I usually carry back livestock to GA from there on the plane whenever I visit PA!!! Great selection of equipment and livestock with many well stocked tanks. The livestock room is downstairs. I'll be making another trip there on Thursday this week!

With all these people we sould meet sometime at the hidden reef to do a frag swap.

Everyone could just bring what frags they have and we could all swap.

Would anybody else be interested. I have some purple acro frags, a nice orange Montipora digitata frag and a small tank raised BTA. Also have a colt frag attached and ready to go.

reefann, HA yeah West Chester is where they are from. I grew up with one of them. Great guys actualy. (well most of them) Glad to see such a great response. I have made several trips to that pet place in lancaster but none to hidden reef. Maybe a few of us can meet up sometime and go up there. Where in philly is it (ie crossroads)? Thanks guys. nice to see support for a new guy.

THIS IS A GREAT IDEA. I dont have a whole lot to offer, but i do have a few corals available. i have 2 large green star polyps rocks, a cool mushroom, and more fragging as we speak. it might be the first time i go to the LFS without spending any money   . actually thats not true, one time i went down there i got into an accident in that god awful parking lot, and i didnt get done with the cops till after they closed.

I'm in center city Philadelphia and would be glad to help if I can. I have tried all the LFSs in Philadelphia and the PA, NJ, and DE suburbs. I do not have a good opinion of any of them, especially Hidden Reef. I mail order all supplies, all tank-raised fish, and some inverts. For inverts and wild-caught fish, it's really worth the two-hour drive to Absolutely Fish in Clifton, NJ. I don't think any LFS in the Philadelphia area compares to AF. Good luck.

lawndoctor:

Thanks for the tip on the LFS. Yeah the Hidden Reef may have it's bad looking days (like after the last holiday sale) but things have been looking half decent there very recently.

reefann:

The Hidden Reef is the best place in Philly that I've found by FAR, it's "my LFS". Compared to That Pet Place, it is a whole lot smaller, with the potential for better care of livestock and service. It is a bit more expensive than That Pet Place, but it does have a large selection of livestock and drygoods that are close by. That Pet Place is so huge that it suffers from a Home Depot - like atmosphere, but boy do they have a huge selection. It was the only place I could find some species of African Ciclids.

ben:

I'd love to do a frag swap. I wish I had more to trade, what with basically starting my tank over again a few months back. I'd gladly pay for frags that are from local tanks, as well as share some species of this and that that are doing well for me. I'm already trading stuff with beerbaron.

Yeah I dont really listen to what I am told at That Pet Place. But I love the selection especially for dry goods. Plus I like taking a walk through the reptile room. As for trading frags I dont have any yet only about 3 corals in my tank. I have been going slow on stocking corals.

thats awesome. we should definatly do this trade thing. prices down south seem to be better for some things and this would work out great.

TheRookie: how big of an oscar stand are you building. i have a 110 gal oscar tank with 2 oscars and a pim catfish. love the tank, but something that tall is way hard to clean.

As Ben mentioned earlier in the thread check out the Philly Reef Club, www.phillyreef.org The trades have been picking up at the meetings. Just picked up some nice frags from Dr. Mac that should be clippable in a couple months.
Lawndoctor, where in Center City are you. I'm at 12th & Spruce.

Talk about luck!

I just logged into the board for the first time in over a year or so. The purpose? To ask about LFS stores in the Philly region. I just moved my 45 reef down from upstate NY, and am having a heck of a time finding a decent store.

I visited the Hidden Reef this weekend, but wasn't too impressed. Good selection, but I didn't feel their corals looked all that healthy. The place was a zoo too...

I'm in Pottstown, PA. Mongomery county. I'll definately have to check out that place in Lebanon.

I'd love to meet for a frag trade as well. My tank is mostly softies, but I have plenty of xenia, green star polyps, and yellow and orange zooanthalids to trade.

Nice to see the hobby is active in this area. I was getting disheartened.
