I have a Sony DSC-S30 digital camera. I got it a few years ago. I see all the impressive macro shots people post and I wanted to try some but they come out blurry with the digital zoom. I don't know anything about photography. Do you use added-on lenses to get good macros? What can I do to my camera to get nice macros?

I,

I don't have as good a camera as you, but what I can tell you is that my digital zoom can only get so close. I put on the macro setting, then the digital zoom, but there is still a limit to how close I can get. Perhaps there is some way to add something to your particular camera, but until you find that out, try backing up a tiny bit and using a tripod.

you should have an led screen on it. if you use that, you should get what you see. use a chair or stool to hold the camera steady. if you chose to try a flash than be sure to get it at an angle so you won't get reflection of the flash .try to either open the lens up and get closer to the tank or use the tele, but stay farther from the subject. main thing is HOLD IT STEADY , that's more than likely why they're fuzzy. you've got to have the light with most point and shoot digital's, but your tank lights should be enough.

Upgrade your camera when you can afford it, they have gotten so much better in the past few years it is incredible.

I'm not really familiar with your camera, but I never ujse the digital zoom on mine. It really degrades the pic IMHO. I always use the optical zoom.

Make sure the glass is really clean so it doesn;t focus on a smudge or something else on the glass and try using a tripod to keep the cam steady. It takes practice but I'm sure you can get some really nice pics with the cam.

I use a sony dscf505v myself and I have used the new 707. Maybe when sony comes out with a newer version again I'll get that one.

Digital zoom = image resize. It is computer calculated process to enlarge a certain part of the scene. The quality of the image degrades, because additional pixels to create enlarged image are added utilizing interpolation.

OR maybe buy yourself a tele adapter that gives you extra optical zoom. You should get one for around $50. I think you can get adapter up to 2.5x for your camera. I used one with S50 that is pretty much same camera with more resolution. With 7.5x opitcal zoom and camera on little tripod (to eliminate hand shake) you should be able to make some nice photos of your tank.
Check cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1379233194 to see what I am talking about I am not sure about the quality of this specific one, but there are others too.
