I want to add a skimmer to my tank which is now comprised of two tanks. One 55 gallon and a 30gallon underneath with a DSB and macro's growin on a reverse daylight schedule(sp?)

I've always been fascinated with Tunze since reading about German reefs years ago. And I like their claim of having a low impact on plankton. Anyone have any experience with these?

If not, what other type of skimmer would you suggest? Or should I forgo the skimmer all together?

Thanks in advance guys, you've helped me a lot already.

I use the smallest horizontal model, I believe it is the 210, on a 30g tank/sump setup. I like it very much. It does an effective job. I especially like the fact that it releases almost no bubbles back into the sump.

Hi,

Regarding the plankton friendly part, I am using an ETSS 800 for my 120G sps tank. I also have macro algae in my sump and the reason why I went for the ETSS is because it claims to be plankton friendly. A bit pricy but I like it.

You can check out AE Tech's site for more information on how to choose a proper size skimmer for the tank size you want. HTH!

Hi I just recently purchased my first Tunze. I too have the same facination after reading Sprungs old books. It is a great skimmer. Back when I used to not have any cash, I purchased this knock off brand from Taiwan and it was just okay. My Tunze is very small (220 model). It is like 11 inches by 8. It is super quiet and no bubbles back into sump. The only bad thing I have heard about them was that sometimes you could get a bad pump and you have to replace it with a Tunze brand pump. If you have a dealer it is not a problem but trying to coordinate warranty stuff with Tunze in Germany sounds like too much trouble. I purchased mine from www.customaquatic.com They have however discontinued Tunze. Said that it was too much trouble supporting the product line. They did not like dealing with Tunze. They should still have a few left in stock. Maybe you could work a deal. If my Tunze goes, I will go with the new Euroreef skimmer. It costs bank but is built like a tank and I have heard great stuff about them.

Don't buy a Berlin. Very disappointing. I can't believe how poorly it skims my FOWLR with a heavy bioload. If I get a cup of skimmate A WEEK I am lucky. I just bought a Euro-Reef and am about to put it in. It was pricey but I have heard great reviews of them from several sources.
