Hey All-

I was advised (well advised) to replace my rio 600 with a maxi 1200, which I have on the way. It comes with a venturi attachment, maybe not the right one though? I cannot find a venturi rejuvination kit for sale online, any ideas? I bought the one from petsolutions.com - didnt realize at the time that there were different venturi mods for this pump, or did I get the right one

maxi jet specs at petsolutions : http://www.petsolutions.com/cgi-bin/cgi ... 00000&l=35

the catalog description says it comes with venturi air intake ability.

Any other mods I should know about?

I ask here as the guys over at CPR dont say much about anything unless you like rios. And we all like rios, right?

right?

;)

I have a CPR Bakpak 2R and I did the MJ1200 modification. The venturi that comes with the pump is not the right one. You need this one:

http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant ... de=MJ-VENT

as the venturi must go on the intake. There is a homemade version, but I've heard it doesn't work as well and for $3.95, why bother.. :?

The MJ1200 increases the turnover rate, which is a good thing for skimmers :D It also seemed to resolve the bubbles returning to the tank. You can't use the bubbletrap/preskimmer with this pump however, but it seemed to be a POS anyway, IMO.

I also did an airstone mod. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the output for a small skimmer.

If it is the standard venturi intake that comes with the Maxijet, then that isn't what you are looking for. It puts the Venturi at the output rather than the input which won't work for the skimmer application. Premium Aquatics is the only one I have found online that carries the intake. It can be found here MaxiJet Venturi Intake. And it is onyl $4. Here is a pic of the attachment as well

I used one to upgrade my PM HOT1 clone from a RIO 800 to a MJ1200 and it was a big difference in the skimmer's effectiveness.

when you get your MJ, take the piece of black tubing that comes with it and just stick it in then intake of your powerhead. On the other end of the tube, put the little valve-intake thingy. It will work just as well as the $4 venturi.
That's what I did.

Hey

Thanks all for the tips! I was going to ask about that surface skimmer next, good to hear that it isnt worth it.

Soon to be the owner of a 4 dollar retro kit.

In your opinion(s) with the maxi jet 1200 and an airstone mod, could I drop my nitrate from 10ppm down some more, say closer to 0?

30 Gallon tank, 3 fish. Clownfish, clown tang, goby sand sifter.

Curious.. May need to be a seperate thread.

I have a CPR back pac with the original Rio. I didn't know of the improvements that you folks are posting. I have been pulling greenish H2O and you can actually see the detritus that splashes on the cup cover. The foam is some what dry depending on the height adjustment. No red slime no nitrates very little fan algae. I always thought this meant it (the bac pac w/Rio was working well. Please before I go the route that seems to be the consensus explain the rational behind the improvements. I would also like to know what IMO stands for.(don't laugh I'm still new at this)

Well, In My Opinion..

I don't want a RIO in my tank. Known for catastrophic failure.

Also, the maxijet 1200 doubles the turnover rate at 295gph. This is good. But you need bubble contact time too...hence the airstone mod.

I have been pm with krusty as I have have implemented the mods.

I had some good sludge and the foam is pretty decent I would say for a small skimmer.

Hey All-

Yes, Emily has been helping me out a ton- let me add also that I have 3 rios in the tank (inherited the whole setup) and they do not run well- none of them. The 600 on the bak pak couldnt even generate enough power to get water to the cup. Replaced it with an 800 that came with the tank- same power. Like my LFS said, (Rios are great, while they work...)

The maxi jet is a huge improvement. I will be adding the airstone mod next- I will post results.

Dayum..Clown Tang in a 30G?

Tangs need more room..alot more room.

Especially Clows..they suggest a min of 120G tank.
But I have a Clown Tang on my 75 and been doing well for over a year and he's happy.

But I am pushing it..but a 30 is way too extreme.
I dunno if I'd chance a Clown Tang on a 30..not enough swiming room and they are very hard to keep as it is.

Jeff- or, tang police ;)

Yeah, I know its too small for him. I inherited the setup- and I do feel pretty bad for the tang. He's cagey. Doesnt seem too happy. Been in there for awhile though. I think he tried to pick a fight with me last night! I was in front of the tank and he was flashing his dorsal fin at me. Neat to see, since he has some amazing colors only seen when he is being aggressive.

to all- I wouldnt mind selling him to a happier/healthier environment. PM me if you would want him. I dont have an LFS I would trust with him. And I cannot afford the big setup I want- nor should I right now, dont know enough yet.

Let me know
