Thanks for the info guys. I have been doing some reading on Xenia, and they say it is pretty easy to grow. So I have done some triming with my scissors and attached the polpys to a piece of LR and place in a 10 gal that I have set up to have some fun and try to grow some.

I also started out with three pieces. I don't want to ruin your fun, but just keep this in the back of your head. Once you got them like this, the other side looks similar...They can't be stopped!

I had to remove a lot of my rock so that they would stop irritating my other corals.

I put mine in the refugium so they can't overgrow corals. The first pic is anthelia. Their care requirements are similar. Mine sit side by side in the refugium and both grow like crazy.

the first pic is pom-pom xenia, pic 2 is xenia elongata...the third is probably red sea xenia or it MIGHT be another color varity of pom-pom. The stalks on anthelia are a little more segmetned than those in the pic. I have all these species in my tank..with two color varieties of pom-pom xenia.

The first one I believe is Anthelia

Nope, Anthelia has a "mat" between the stalks. It resembles a large star polyps in it's growth form.

I haven't seen my any anthelia pulse yet

They don't really pulse they way Xenia does, it's more of a wave. It still looks real cool though :D

Either of these two can reach plague proportions  The good news is that it's the only damn thing I've ever seen that grows right over the top of c. razmosa! (and everything else in their path)

hi.
I agree with some of you, but not all of you.
The first one is NOT a Xenia. It is an Anthelia. The second is regular Xenia from IndoPacific, aka, blue Xenia, tree Xenia, silver tip Xenia, and other names. The third is Xenia from RedSea, aka pink Xenia, etc.

Pulse or not is not used in the taxonomic classification of Xeniiodes, so it does not matter.

Like some have said Anthelia has a mat under it. The first picture does not have a mat. Anthelia also has thinner "poms." The first pictures "poms" look feathery and rather fat. IMO the first one's Anthelia.

"The Anthelia Thick Stem Waving Hand Coral may also be referred to as a Glove Coral or Pom-Pom Coral. They are usually white, tan, or gray. The polyps are not retractable"

The ones in the picture retract into a bulb. So it must be Xenia.[/quote]

hi.
IMO, a web link, particular from a seller, is very unreliable source of information. Please look up references, such as Fabricius et al. Soft Corals and Sea Fans for example, before continue this "I feel/I think" discussion. It is not easy for the classification of member of the Xeniidae family even for some people with experience in taxon., and most of us are not even that good.

I am not trying to ask anyone to "be quiet" in this discussion (who do I think I am??? ), but I just want it to be a little bit more useful.

For some of the picture of the member of the Xenia family, check out the following link (look in Family number 14):
http://www.calacademy.org/research/izg/ ... .htm#alcyo

Picture identification is very difficult.
