Can chiller be placed outdoor? Or does it need a housing?

I just received my 1/2HP CSL chiller. It's much bigger then I thought (and heavy too). I am placing this unit outdoor and is wondering if occasional sprinkle of rain will ruin the unit? The chiller already has an ABS cover over it and the unit will be placed on cinder blocks to keep it dry most of time.

the cost in sheltering it should pale in comparison to purchasing the chiller, no?

you may be able to hide the thing a bit that way too.

I have mine out doors now for many years. It's under an over hang and behind a partial wall. I made sure that it is well ventilated. Works great and keeps the heat outside!~)

Mine is also plumbed through my wall to the backyard. I built a small wooden roof for it to deflect rain and direct sunlight. I also made sure all the piping was wrapped in insulation to make the chiller run as efficiently as possible.

Mine has been outdoors for 3 years. I bought a rubbermaid storage container with a lid, put the chiller inside & put insulation( strofoam looking sheet) arond it. I cut the ends out of storage container & put a ceiling plastic vent on each side for air intake & air exaust. HD also sells clear dryer exaust vents to put over side vents directing air down & keeping all rain out.
This works great ! The dryer exaust vents also work great on the fans in your hood. Instead of getting hot air blown into your face when you walk by your tank, the air is blown up.
