I was originally thinking that pvc must just come threaded, but then what happens when you need to cut it to length? Obviously then you only have one threaded side. I figure you can put a coupler in there, but that seems awfully wasteful. So, how does one thread pvc?

I work in a machine shop, so I usually do outside threads on a lathe. I don't think a regular die is sharp enough for plastic, but haven't tried. A cutting tap will work for internal threads.

You can thread PVC the same way as regular pipe, but why would you go to all the trouble. A coupling is .15 and just glues on. By the way, you are only to thread schedule 80 PVC, not schedule 40, the walls are too thin and it is not recommended.

A $0.25 fitting called a "male adaptor". PVC pipe slip-fits and glues on one side, male threads are on the other.

Hi all,

don't thread the PVC. You can't get a consistant cut with the cutter and the walls are too thin as coralhead mentioned. Use a male adapter or do want a feamle thread? you can get both fittings at a hardware store. get some good glue and use primer to get a good seal.

let the glue sit for a few hours and then rinse the piping to get rid of any unwanted smell and dust.
