hi,folks
i got my diamond goby 2 days ago,,,this guy is going nuts..shifting my sand thru his gils rightt and left
he make deep home under my rock....so i am worry about my dsb
anybody have shifting goby in reef tank?
thankx
At one time, we had a pair of dimonds in our 125gal. reef. That was short lived, they were eating bed inhabitants, but what was worse, they tunneled under rocks, tumbling them and covering the nearest corals with sand. We would constantly find our plate coral, and brain corals covered. We lured them them out using the old inverted soda bottle trick
Harpo.
I believe you are refering to the sleeper goby. These fellows sifts sand through their gills in search of food all day long. If your sandbed is shallow and are devoid of live organic matter, your sleeper goby are doomed to die if you are not successful in feeding them with prepared foods.
We would like to stress the importance of research before purchase.
They are perfect in a tank with large surface area of sand bed. But if your tank differs, your DSB will quickly run out of detrivores and worms and the goby will slowly waste away.
I had one. It ate my two blood shrimp. That was when I officially understood not to trust LFS for ANYTHING. They simply want to sell you what they have in stock. After I got the Diamond Goby out of the tank, I bought a new blood shimp at a different LFS! Now I think I'll get another one!
Like Harpo and Hippo said, they are bad for the DSB too.
I used the Fishtrap to catch him. It took a few days, but I got him!
Most LFS's carry the Fishtrap. Mine loaned one to me. It's a clear cylinder with a trap door that is connected to a fishing line. When fish swim in, you drop the door and he is trapped inside.
Well, they need some incentives to go inside. It's going to look foreign in the tank. So you need to have patience with it. They may take hours to days before they ever venture in.........and hopefully, you are around to release the door.
