Argh. I've put up with white noise for years now from these tanks. Our home is never quiet. Well, now the tank setup that has been under construction for two years is now operational. It sounds like a freakin jacuzzi is in my living room. And I'm not getting wet, what's the problem?
As I understand it, my husband is running two large pumps on his 75 gal setup, an IWAKI 30RLT and IWAKI 20RLT. So any suggestions? And I don't mean smart ones like move out or ear plugs. I mean what can we do to muffle this noise. He has sound absorbing material lining the tank stand interior. Help me out folks, my sanity and the safety of my family are at sake.

Why not go with a smaller external pump and make up for the diffrence with power heads or other wavemaking device such as the Tunze Turbelle, ReefTec, or Wave2K.

If you want a completely silent pump, go with the CSL Velocity pump-it will however add a few degrees to your water. GRI pumps are also very good and much quieter than Iwaki's. By going this route, not only will you eliminate (or minimize the pump noise) but you will also slow the flow through your sump.

Personally, I don't see a need to run all kinds of volume through a sump. The same turnover can be achieved in the tank with other devices as I mentioned above.

Also, I'm not sure whether or not your utilizing a Durso Standpipe, but this will also cut down on the noise of your overflows.

If someone sees any reason why anyone would need such high flow in their sump, please chime in.

ditto with the wavemaker and the powerheads. ou can alos try using a towel over the pumps. this might make them overheat though.

The CSL pumps are great. i might use one for my closed loop.....

I have a Wavemaster Pro with three Maxijet 1200's on it. it works good. Might want to shop around though.

I assume the Iwakis are external? If so, then a submersible pump might help, assuming you could add a couple degrees without problems. Another option is basement sump, if that is feasible. Put all that stuff in the basement, plus minimizes heat issues. Try to reduce plumbing joints, if possible. I used to get a lot of noise from inside the tubing until I converted to flexible PVC, which helped minimize fittings.

I second the recomendation on decreasing water through the sump. A simple closed loop would be more effective for water motion. The Durso standpipe should also help, and there are a number of modifications people use if the basic design poses any problems.

When I hear silence I think something is wrong...It's not the noise that needs to be fixed...it's the silence!

What noises are you hearing? Water noise or pump vibrating noise?

I know what you mean but I suffer from Tinnitis......and I would love to hear somethin other than a tuning fork in my ear!..so I guess the louder the skimmer and pumps the more comfortable I am. Ihave to sleep with a fan running.

BangBang return to the sump where your humor is better appreciated, its easy to see why your alone. Good luck with the meds!

Now on to the problem the major complaint of my loving spouse is the gurgling sound emitted by the water rushing down the pipes. I have a stockman overflow the only thing different is that my bulkhead is on the back of the tank so I'm forced to use two 90 ells. The standpipe is 1.25 and the drain outside the tank is 1 inch. I have also wrapped the pipe with insulation! I think I have the sump noise fixed other than the pumps. Iwaki pumps are not quiet

What ever made you think I am alone?
You posted once about getting divorced soon and moving to a trailer park

Anyway, sorry about that.
How about build a well insilulated box around the pumps to dampen the sound.

Do you ever have anything worthwhile to add or do you just like seeing your words in print?

I wish I had your free time. :)

If it's gurgling I recommend a Durso standpipe, and re-do of the drain plumbing to flex PVC so as to minimize fittings.

All plumbing is done in spaflex pvc :? The only two points of reduced flow are the 90's and I have no other way around that because of the location of the bulkhead. Is there a difference between the durso mod and the stockman type overflow? difference in noise?

Any chance you could take a picture of your plumbing so we could better visualize what's going on? If not, how about sketching out a drawing in MS Paint (or similar) and posting it?

Easy fix. Put a ball valve on the overflow line and cut the flow down. End of problem. Just make sure you put a thin piece of plexiglass on top of your overflow box to keep the snail out. 8)

I switched the pumps, Iput the Iwaki MD30 on the closed loop and the MD20 on the return. This seems much quieter than before. Still toying with hole size in the overflow trying to get it right. These Iwaki's are still humming loudly not sure if tile floor adding to the noise level. This problem has made the Southdown sand cloud seem minimal :P
