I went to three different grocery stores today looking for Squid. The closest things I found were Calamari steaks. They are big white pieces of something (squid I assume). They looked uncooked. Is this just a bunch of ground up squid put into a steak?

If these "steaks" aren't what I'm looking for, I'm sure I could to go a local bait shop and get frozen squid (whole squids).

What do you guys think?

I am appalled! What lousy grocer isn't carrying whole squid for you? Yeah, I'd suggest going the bait shop route, but they'll charge you up the ying yang for 'em. If it's ground up then..I dunno, I like to do the work myself. But then again, I'm weird, in so many ways.

Jason, no idea what it's like in California or if you can just bop into Ralphs but here in Texas they sell boxes of squid for about 3-4 bucks. It's usually in the packaged frozen food section - may be a regional thing? I would assume that you would have better access to fresh seafood in Huntington Beach than we would in central Texas. I used up about 1/4 a box making staple food and chop/thaw out small pieces once in a while to spot feed certain corals and my trigger.

We go to food Wholesalers here for our shrimp/squid mix.
Normal grocery stores don't carry it here either.

I used to be able to get whole squid, fresh or frozen, from my local grocer's. I think they should still be carrying it. I think it's a load of hooey that they don't. Get the "bait" squid, but what's bugging me is that what the bait shop sells doesn't have to meet certain standards. If I were in your position I would want to feed restaurant quality foods to the new shark.

(Still don't think a standard 190's big enough, but it sounds like you've really tried to research it as best you can, and you've been doing everything as carefully as you can. I am glad for that.)

that should be simply the body of the squid minus the tentacles and head.

Look for a seafood vendor - there has to be plenty of sources in the LA area, try an Asian market - they usually have all sorts of fun stuff.

Ok, went out again and found it. A new Ralph's has an awesome fresh seafood section. They had fresh cleaned Whole Squid, and frozen non-cleaned Whole Squid. I went for the frozen non-cleaned squid. Waiting for Jose from Marine Depot to stop by with some Selcon and I’m going to whip up a batch of “King’s Seafood Delight!”

The recipe:
Fresh Non-cleaned/Non-cooked Squid (beak and all) cut up
Fresh Non-cleaned/Non-cooked Wild White Shrimp (tail and all) cut up
Frozen Krill
Silversides
Mysis Shrimp
Seaweed Selects Green Algae
Seaweed Selects Brown Algae
Selcon

Yum!

Sounds like a date..dinner anyone?

I'll suggest making smaller batches (esp. with the Selcon) instead of one huge one, just to be sure that they're getting top nutrition.

Hey jason,

I am in Poway, CA = socal. I have been to vons and they sell something called seafood medley. It is perfect for tank animals. It is a good mix of seafoods that is prewrapped and frozen. Note - wrapped by the vons people not some unknown company.

I'll have to check that out next time I'm at Vons.

King Jason,
go to one of the local chinese/japanese markets (look up 99 ranch market for instance), it'll be there. Otherwise, isn't there a santa monica seafood in costa mesa (not that far). I gotta admit, that's kinda bizarre, I can walk into the whole foods market where I live in L.A. and get whole squid.
