OK....

after my last post....

this was the worst day. I had a cyano sludge over 75% of my sand and my pipe organ coral was covered. I cleaned him off with a powerhead and moved him to another area with more flow. I then did a 10g water change with 1/8th inch hose and siphoned every piece of cyano out. I pulled about 5lbs of sand out with it.

I conitnued to drip kalk and my daily dosage of bionic.....

I broke down and used a 1/2 dose of the red sea cyano killer.....

today...

tank looks 100% better. I just did another 10g water change. added 10lbs of carib-sea aragamx select.

my skimmer is going nuts. I imagine it is pulling out the cyano killing stuff. I set the skimmer to very dry foam... (euroreef copy) and am removing the junk out the cup...

i will test my params in the morning..... If needed will do another 10g change.....

let me know if i am on the right track. :?

If you are going to use a cyano killer, then you should really use the recommended dosage. Cyano is a bacteria, therefore the killer is an antibiotic. Just like in humans, using less than the recommended dosage could prevent the problem from being cured completely and will make it more likely for immune strands to develop.

The cyano killer stuff is a peroxide blend. when it reacts with the water and cyano it starves it for oxygen. I siphoned out about 1/4 inch of my sand bed to rid myself of it and then the rocks also. over the course of a 4days i have changed 40gallons of water.

I did productive water changes rather than bulk water. The 1/2 dose was to finish them off. Due to the PH swing that can occur i chose not to do a full dose. I figure i would shock my livestock too much.....

so far so good.

no traces of it..... yet.... i reduced my feedings also. i dont feed alot anyway. so i feed with the actinics on in the morning.....

Just a suggestion.... 8)

Check your tap water for the presence of phosphates. I have been battling a small cyno outbreak for 18 months and finally discovered it was due to the tap water. At one time, I had but one fish in the tank and fed it VERY small portions and the cyno thrived.

The strange thing is it actually dissipates as the day goes on. It is almost as if it consumes all the phophates as the length of the light cycle increases and starts to die. Then releases the phosphates back into the water column and starts all over the next day.

I am going to try to use the new salifert product to see if it helps.

I think it might be best to feed at night within an hour of the lights going out to give the skimmer time to remove excess nutrients before the lights come on.

I have added some Phosban to the tank. this has helped....

today i fed about an hour before the lights went out. I also had a power failure for 3hr. i hope this didnt give it the lag it needed to spark up again. i just got the thing under control....

I do 10g water changes weekly and i thro an extra 20g or so a month in for good measure....
