60 gal AGA
29 gal sump
MAG Drive 24 return pump
Euro Reef CS6-2 skimmer
1 1/2 PVC to sump
1" PVC to 3/4" flex hose returning to four 3/4" bulkhead fittings in which each bulkhead fitting breaks off into two 1/2 flared nozzles (so 8 flared nozzles all together).

It may not be a thing of beauty, but the darn system actually works :)

Did you modify the overflow on your tank? I have a 90gal AGA and the single overflow can hardly keep up with a mag 9.5 let alone a mag 24. How do you keep the water from ending up on the floor with that much flow???

jhaag,

I know the Mag 24 is a major overkill. But my way of thinking is it is easier to have a big pump and control the flow with a gate valve vice to small of a pump, thus having to go and buy a bigger pump. My sump can easily hold the water drain off, so I have quite a bit of room for error down there.

My sump really isn't the problem either, I already had to enlarge the slots a little on the overflow and even now the water is probably 3/4 of the way up the slots if not more when the current is circulating. I just wondered about the water creaping up and spilling over...

jhaag, I was running into the same problem.... but I only use a Mag 7!
So what I did was remove the rubber gasket thing on the top of my overflow.
I also shortened the 1" dia standpipe in my overflow by about 6" (now it's about 14" tall. I get nice laminar flow through it now without any "gurgling"

Where did you get that nice bag that I see attached to the overflow tube into the sump in one of the latest pictures? I am looking for something like that but one that is open weave enough to let the little "critters" escape in to the sump.

UGGGG...i am going to have to redo the entire plumbing..I am not getting the water movement I want..and I do not want to install a power head or anything for the simple reason why I went through the trouble of having all the return holes drilled because I wanted a uncluttered aqaurium. And since my Mag-24 is generating so much heat, my water temp is at 83 degrees, and I have not even installed the dual 175 wt MH lighting. I can drop down to a Mag-12, but the lighting heat is still in question. My new design will include a external return sump pump and another external pump for a closed loop. I am also going to install a chiller due to the fact of the lighting and the warm southern cali heat. Yes, I may not even need the chiller, but I care not to leave it out only to find out that I will need one, then have to redo the plumbing yet again. So might as well install it now and be done with it.

Sorry to hear of the problems. My AmpMasters kick out a lot of heat also. My temp stays constant now around 81, but I'm scared of what may happen when it heats up this summer. I too may end up getting a chiller.

What pumps do you plan to use? Is your tank acrylic or glass? When you do your closed loop are you going to be able to drill holes for the intake?
