Anyone know what type of "nutrient" or "fertilizer" is added to saltwater to grow/culture phytoplankton in-home? Also need to know at what ratio/percentage it is added.

I know Florida aqua farms uses an "algae grow" additive. I've heard miracle grow will work as well. Just want to ascertain th dosage. Any links/ideas?

Hey, you can use tank water!!! Just make sure you boil it for a few minutes to kill anything live and prevent contamination. It should have plenty of nutrients to grow them. Now, go back to WAMAS man :P

If I make fresh saltwater as a culture medium, how much and what could I add to make it rich enough to grow the phyto, yet not too full of nutrients that it will pollute my tank when I add the mature batch?

I've been running my own cultures for a while. IMO the last thing I would play with and try to do on my own is the algae grow additive. The F2 formula they sell is is less than $6 for a bottle that will last close to a year. Also, the F2 formula has been tried and tested for over 20 years. I know we all like to do DIY stuff, but I think it would cost more than it's worth, as well as running the risk of accidentally adding something harmful.
