I need help choosing a good external skimmer. I like the euro reef skimmer but I dont know if you can use them external or not. I also like the aqua c ev240. Can someone tell if you can use these external and if not what is a good external skimmer for a 150 reef.

i am telling ya,none of those skimmers compare to the Aerofoamer line,i have had mine running for a couple weeks now and have never seen anything like it (i owned an LFS until last sept, fire),the last skimmer you will ever buy,and production second to none,as well as customer service from Frank at reefconcepts.com,he is incredable,i have read good and bad about euro reef and AquaC,have never seen a bad word from any Aerofoamer owner, here is a link comparing the biggies.....Riot....

I'm using an EV180 on my 125g FOWLR tank. I have had absolutely no problems with it for the past year.

Can you use all these skimmers external or in the sump or are they just for in the sump. Also where can I get a Aerofoamer online.

The Euroreef have to be used in the sump, except I think for the largest ones. Aqua-c works fine out of the sump. I have an EV-180 and like it.

Actually, that is one of the things that convinced me to try a Euroreef.

In that test the ER performs nearly as well as the AF while using 50 watts of power (Sedra 5000 pump) vs. the AF (Mag 24 pump) using 265 watts. At my electric rates that's another $17 a month to run the AF...

The ER was also available for $475 (pump included) while the AF was $600 + $125 pump. Thats $250 higher initial cost for the AF.

In my situation (I had room in my sump for an internal skimmer) the ER was clearly much more efficient and cost effective.

That said, had I needed to go with an external skimmer, I would have gotten a beckett type. Probably one from Andy at MRC.

JMO...

yup,if a few bucks here and there is a concern, definitely go with the inferior skimmers,i spare no expense,i want the best, and thats the Aerofoamer hands down, even that comparison link does it no justice, and the mag24 would only be needed in the 48" skimmers, the 24 inch one's are fine with a mag12....Riot....

No need for sarcasm. Nobody is saying AFs aren't great skimmers, but there are certainly lots of good skimmers out there (including other beckett models) that can be had for substantially less money.

I think for most people, cost is a factor in choosing what is best for them.

BTW, I consider $250 more than a few bucks...

Thanks everyone for your replies. It is still a tough decision to make but I know it is going to have to be an external skimmer and I am looking more towards an aqua c or an aerofoamer. Its a tough choice but like wolfman said 250 bucks is a lot more for the aerofoamer. Any more info would be great. Thanks

Also, can the MRC skimmers be used external. Other than that it looks like I am leaning to the EV240 with the dolphin 1200 pump. What do you guys think about that pump for external use.

i am waiting for my EV240 right now and according to EV the Sen900 works best on their skimmer but that dolphin should also be fine.

Wow, nice analysis. Makes sense to me.
