I don't know alot about macro algae. What kind and types should I get? I want to either grow them in my sump or get a hang on type refugium to grow them in.

Thanks.....

You can grow whatever types you like depending on what you can get your hands on. It has been my experience that "green" macros grow much faster than "red" macros, and thus I would assume the green algae is better if you are looking to achieve nutrient export. I grow some red macros too just to harvest to feed to my tangs, but I have never had good luck getting strong growth from it.

I really like Chaetomorpha , sometimes called spagetti algea, if you can get some. It grows fast, tangs love it,has never crashed on me, and it's growth form provides a nice refuge for breeding pods.

I started my refugium with just caulerpa, but whenever I visit a reefer with something I don't have, I ask for a handful, just because I like variety.

Thanks for the info laura! I want anything that looks good and that will do some heavy slugging and battle nuisance algae.

Anybody else?

I would second Chaetomorpha. Its all I have, floating in a 20 inch wide ball in the middle of my sump. Great stuff.

your best bet would be to put some live rock into your refugum for a few weeks. you'll be amazed what algae you get growing from it!!! or you can do what i have, get an outbreak of whitespot that kills all of your fish and leave your tank devoid of fish. mines been without fish for about 3 months and i pull out about 7 pounds of algae out a months, i have about 8 different types of caulerpa growing. ok it's not exactly exciting to watch but, when i get my new tank the refugum will be ready to go fairly quickly!!
